Stay Active With Parkour ANYWHERE, Even During Lockdown
It's super important to stay active to maintain physical and mental health. But finding the motivation to "work out" can be really difficult, and figuring out what types of exercise to do with everything shut down is tricky. Plus, if you’re anything like me, the idea of a globo gym just doesn’t sound appealing in the first place.
Well here are three reasons why parkour is the perfect way to stay active and exercise ANYWHERE, including from home.
1) ADAPTATION: Parkour is all about adapting to circumstances. It doesn't require specific gear or facilities, which means there are a lot of possibilities in the park, on a single wall, or right at home. It just takes a bit of creativity and a playful mindset. Speaking of which...
2) PLAYFULNESS: Parkour can be hard work, as we're training to be strong, flexible, skilled, and technically competent. But the way we approach all of those things is with a playful attitude. Sometimes by literally playing games, sometimes by turning work INTO games.
3) RESILIENCE: By doing parkour, we make overcoming obstacles a frequent and welcome practice. Some of the biggest obstacles we as a society face today involve social isolation, mental health, and staying active under restrictions. These obstacles can be easier to overcome with practice.
The last thing I'll say is that parkour is for EVERYONE. The obstacles you face are YOUR obstacles and your journey to overcome them is significant. It need not be compared to someone else's journey. Sure, there are tons of videos of high-level athletes doing awe-inspiring skills, sometimes at height. But as movement coach Julie Angel said, the extreme element of parkour is only one small piece of a much larger practice. To turn away from the practice in its entirety based on that piece would be similar to choosing not to drive a car because race car driving is too dangerous.
